A brief background

It was first developed in 1986 by Aldus Corporation, the TIFF format was developed in response to feedback from scanner makers and software developers. Its main objective was to create a standard for raster file containing scanned images for scanners of all manufacturers.

Later, it included support for grayscale or color.

In 1988, version 5.0 was released which had support for color palette images and LZW compression.

The last version of the TIFF format was released in the year 1992 (!) and it includes support to CMYK as well as YCbCr color images, as well as the JPEG compression method.
In 1994, Adobe Systems acquired Aldus and continues to maintain the specification ever since.
